A study permit or student visa is a temporary immigration document issued by the federal government of Canada that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada.
A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days. The 90 days let you prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.
First, International student must get admission to a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) recognized by the government of Canada. Once the student receives a letter of acceptance from a DLI, he or she will be able to apply for a study permit.
When you arrive in Canada, you will be met by an officer from the Canada Border Services Agency.
You will need to show the officer:
· Your letter of introduction from the visa office.
· Your passport or other valid travel documents.
· The letter of acceptance from the school you will be attending.
· Proof of funds documents; and your temporary resident visa, if required.
If you meet all the necessary conditions, the officer will give you a study permit.
In order to get admitted in a Canadian tertiary education institution there are some requirements students must meet, whether it is an undergraduate or a postgraduate program. Depending on the field of studies, programs and other relevant factors competition can vary.
But for all universities, however, students are likely to need:
-High school grades/performance
-An up-to-date passport
-An English and/or French language proficiency qualification
-Proof of how you will be funding your studies
Processing times vary. It depends on the type of application you submit, and where it is processed.
A post-graduation work permit may be issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months up to a maximum of 3 years.
